All of your gear for the pioneer trek will be packed in one of two places: in your 5 gallon bucket with lid or in a large, heavy-duty garbage sack. The bucket will contain your personal items and the garbage sack will contain your sleeping items. LABEL EVERYTHING with your first and last name.
What to Pack in Your Heavy Duty Garbage Bag
- Sleeping bag - cold weather bag (temperatures may get < 30 at night)
- Old warm blanket (inside sleeping bag)
- THIN light weight pad (NO air mattresses or thick foam pads, <6 in when rolled up)
- Coat - warm wind resistant (It can get very cold, day or night)
- Inflatable or small pillow (optional)
What to Pack in Your Bucket
- ALL CLOTHING Sweatshirt or hoodie Rain poncho
- 3 Pair of sturdy socks (Wear one pair, pack the other two)
- 3 Sets of underclothing (Wear one pair, pack the other two)
- Sleep wear (Such as sweats - may only be worn while sleeping)
- Tin plate (pie pan works great)
- Hand towel or wash cloth
- Comb or brush Deodorant Toothbrush and toothpaste (place in zip lock bag)
- Pair of shoes to walk/hike in shoes to wear at night around camp (still protective for feet)
- Pair of leather work gloves (Used to protect your hands while pulling the handcart. $2.00 at Walmart)
- Small flashlight or headlamp and extra batteries
- Chaffing powder or anti chaffing stick
- Chemical heat packages (Optional - May use them in your sleeping bag at night)
- If you wear contacts/glasses, wear your glasses. There may be a lot of dust.
- Required Medications/ Allergy Medicine (Medical personnel need to know all medicine you have including pain relievers. Medical personnel will have some ibuprofen/acetaminophen available)
NO JEANS, LEGGINGS, SHORTS, TSHIRTS (this is for sun, chaffing, and insect protection) WOMEN DO NOT NEED TO WEAR DRESSES BUT MAY CHOOSE TO IF DESIRED
Young Women Should Bring:
- Wide brim hat with chin tie (NO BONNETS)
- Feminine hygiene supplies
- Hair elastics or fasteners (Keeps your hair out of your face during windy conditions
Clothing options
- 2 Mid-calf, long-sleeve dresses, or skirts and blouses (Wear one, pack one)
- Pair of Leggings only for under the dress
- Apron (optional)

- Wide brim hat with chin strap (No baseball type hats, no military type hats)
What to Bring on the Bus
- Sack lunch Water bottle, filled, that can have a carabiner attached to it
- 6-8 individual packets of gatorade or liquid iv only
- Carabiner (to attach water bottle to handcart)
- Book of Mormon/ Journal (stake provided) Bandana (stake provided)
- Small hand sanitizer Sunglasses
- Lip protection – SPF 30+ Sunscreen – SPF 30+ Insect Repellent (small, place in a zip lock bag)
What NOT to Bring
- No immodest clothing (see-thru when wet or dry)
- No shorts, midriffs or sleeveless or short-sleeve tops No T-shirts (As outerwear)
- No fireworks, matches, lighters □No knives No fire arms or weapons
- No cellular phones, or any electronic devices
- No inappropriate materials or behavior that is not consistent with Youth standards
